How to pay your Health Insurance fees (BARMER & MAWISTA)

Your Fintiba Plus package combines the Blocked Account and Health Insurance Confirmation into one digital process. Below you will find all information about when and how you have to pay for your health insurance fees.

Do I need to pay my health insurance before arriving in Germany?

No. When you open your Fintiba Plus package for your visa application, you do not need to pay any monthly health insurance fees upfront. The incoming insurance required for your visa (MAWISTA Visum) is covered by Fintiba*, so you are insured during your visa process without any additional cost.

Your initial transfer only includes:

  • The blocked amount required for your visa
  • The one-time Fintiba service fee for setting up the Blocked Account

Your ongoing health insurance payments will only start after you have arrived in Germany.

When do the health insurance payments start?

Once you are in Germany and your Blocked Account payouts have started, your monthly health insurance payments will be activated automatically.

You do not need to contact your insurer or provide any bank details. The insurance company is automatically linked to the German bank account (Girokonto) that you use for your Fintiba payouts.

Monthly premiums are deducted directly from your German bank account, not from the Blocked Account itself.

How are payments made for each insurance type?

Public Health Insurance (BARMER)

  • Activation: Your public insurance becomes active with the semester start.
  • Payment timing: Premiums are collected on the 15th of the month following the coverage month.

    - Example: The premium for October will be deducted on November 15th.

    - It is normal if you do not see a deduction immediately after activating your payouts.

To receive your BARMER health insurance card, please make sure to:

  1. Upload your photo in your Fintiba account (for your card)
  2. Enter your German address (so BARMER can send your card.

Private Health Insurance (MAWISTA Student / Expatcare)

  • Activation: Your MAWISTA insurance becomes active automatically once your Blocked Account payouts begin.
  • You will receive your policy documents within the next two working days.
  • Payment timing: The monthly premium is automatically withdrawn from your German bank account at the end of each month for that month’s coverage.
