What do the different amounts mean?

You will see three figures. Only the first one is the amount you need to send.

Required amount. The total that needs to be in your account for it to count as fully funded, so we can issue your blocking confirmation.

Required amount = (monthly amount × number of months) + €159 account fee + any additional basic sum

Example: a student opening a Blocked Account for 12 months at the standard monthly amount of €992, with no additional basic sum, needs €12,063 — (€992 × 12) + €159.

You can adjust the monthly amount as long as it meets the legal minimum, and you can choose up to 24 months.

Maximum transfer amount. The ceiling — the most you are allowed to transfer in total. This is not a target, and you do not need to reach it. For a standard monthly amount of €992 over 12 months, the maximum transfer amount is €26,495.00.

Students in India: if you are enrolling at a university that charges tuition fees, some German consulates and embassies ask you to deposit more money into the blocked account. Use the maximum transfer amount when making your transfer. Do not use an additional basic sum for this.

Additional basic sum. Extra funds on top of the standard monthly amount, added to your required amount. This only applies if your authority asks for it, and you will need official documents confirming it. There is no upper limit.
